Filing your 941VI quarterly is only part of USVI payroll compliance. The other part, the one that trips up more businesses, is making your 501VI tax deposits on time. These are the regular payments of withheld income tax and FICA taxes to the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The rules for when they’re due depend on how much you owe.
Miss a deposit or pay late, and the penalties start immediately.
What Is a 501VI Deposit?
Form 501VI is the VI tax deposit coupon. It’s how you remit payroll taxes to the BIR between quarterly filings. Think of your 941VI as the scorecard at the end of each quarter, and your 501VI deposits as the payments you’re making throughout. At the end of the quarter, your total deposits should match what Line 12 of your 941VI shows you owe.
Monthly vs. Semi-Weekly: Which Are You?
Your deposit schedule is determined by your lookback period, the four quarters from July 1 through June 30 of the prior year.
| Total Tax in Lookback Period | Deposit Schedule |
|---|---|
| $50,000 or less | Monthly depositor |
| More than $50,000 | Semi-weekly depositor |
| $100,000 or more in any single deposit period | Next-day depositor (one-time rule) |
New employers start as monthly depositors for their first calendar year, regardless of liability.
Monthly Depositor Rules
Deposit the total taxes accumulated each calendar month by the 15th of the following month. January taxes are due February 15. February taxes are due March 15. And so on.
Semi-Weekly Depositor Rules
- Wages paid on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday: deposit by the following Wednesday
- Wages paid on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday: deposit by the following Friday
Semi-weekly depositors must also attach Schedule B to their 941VI showing the daily tax liability breakdown for the quarter. Forgetting Schedule B is one of the most common filing errors for semi-weekly depositors.
The $100,000 Next-Day Rule
If you accumulate $100,000 or more in tax liability on any single day, you have to deposit it by the next business day. This rule overrides your normal schedule and triggers semi-weekly depositor status for the rest of that calendar year and the following year.
Penalty Tiers for Late Deposits
| How Late | Penalty Rate |
|---|---|
| 1–5 days late | 2% |
| 6–15 days late | 5% |
| More than 15 days late | 10% |
| Not deposited at all | 10–15% |
These add up fast. A business that misses a $5,000 deposit and lets it sit for 30 days is looking at $500–$750 in penalties before interest charges.
2026 Monthly Deposit Deadlines
| Month | Taxes Accumulated | Deposit Due |

When the 15th falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the due date moves to the next business day.
Common 501VI Deposit Mistakes
- Depositing the wrong amount: Using net payroll numbers instead of gross tax liability. Your deposit should equal withheld income tax plus both the employee and employer shares of FICA.
- Not knowing your schedule: A lot of business owners assume they’re on monthly when they’re actually semi-weekly. If your liability crossed $50,000 in the lookback period, monthly deposits are late by definition.
- Sending a check directly to the BIR instead of depositing: Even if the amount is right, this can trigger the 10% penalty.
- Deposit totals that don’t reconcile with 941VI Line 12: The BIR will send a notice if your deposits don’t match your reported liability.
